Gateway Tunnel Project Shutdown Puts Politics Over American Jobs

Monday, February 9, 2026

United Association of Union Plumbers and Pipefitters (UA) General President Mark McManus issued the following statement today after the Trump administration refused to release previously allocated funding for continued construction on the Gateway Tunnel Project:

“The men and women of the United Association are the best trained and most highly skilled craftspeople in our industry – and we are proud to go to work each day to build, maintain, and modernize the critical infrastructure that millions of Americans rely on daily. That includes the Gateway Tunnel, an essential piece of the East Coast travel network. The Trump administration’s decision to block funding that was already allocated for this project will not only cause chaos and disruption in this busy travel corridor, but it is putting thousands of Americans out of work all for a petty political grievance. This decision must be reversed immediately, and the funding must be restored so that our members – the hardworking men and women who build this nation – can get back to work modernizing the infrastructure that American citizens so desperately need.”
